What This Is
Our Apothecary is the place where we talk about herbs, roots, plants, and berries.
This section is about you. Your choices. Your body. How you feel. These are things you can grow in your backyard.
Gifts from Nature
At Tupelo Honey Teas, we have a love of all things natural. That extends through and beyond teas to herbal remedies. The love of herbal foraging and cultivation comes to The Tea Lady from her mom, aunt and grandmother, who all use nature’s remedies whenever they believe they might be useful. There have been times in her life when the Tea Lady has overcome ailments to the great astonishment of her physician, and she just happened to be using specific herbs rumored to have specific healthful benefits. This is the place where she will discuss herbs in detail.
For Our Herbs, We Dig Deep
Learning about herbs goes deeper than just what herb fixes what ailment. Before modern medicine, all people had were herbs. After the discovery of modern medicine, herbal remedies moved to the wayside. However, medicines are made from isolated elements of herbs to fight disease. We want to dive into each herb on every level. From where it is grown, to how it has been used before modern medicine, to what it does to the body when consumed.
I thought this was about tea.
Learning about the plants around you, unless you are a herb nerd like the Tea Lady, may not be top on your list. However, knowing what herbs seem to help your body can allow you to make a delicious tea with added benefits. For example, Bee Balm, which is a fantastic food for the bees, is also in the same family as bergamot (the flavoring in Earl Grey) and the leaves make a delicious tasting tea. Some people find that it soothes colds, sore throats and headaches. And it grows right here in our home of Pittsburgh, PA. Are you intrigued yet?
This is not about medicine.
We believe there is definitely a need for modern western medicine and that one should ALWAYS consult their doctor before using ANY herb. Many modern medicines come from parts of the plants we will talk about in this section. As such, you should always consult your MD before taking anything new to check for counteractions. The Tea Lady and Tupelo Honey Teas IS NOT a licensed herbalist nor are we an MD. Nothing we say should be construed as medical advice. We are simply people who love herbs and want to share the knowledge that has been handed down to us.
